Lionfish Fishing Tournament

Help protect the Caribbean reef while taking part in a community fishing challenge in Playa del Carmen.

The Grupo Cívico Político 28 de Julio invites local fishers, divers, and ocean lovers to join its Lionfish Fishing Tournament on Sunday, September 6. Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean, where they prey on native reef fish and can disrupt coral reef ecosystems. NOAA notes that lionfish are now established across the Atlantic, Gulf, and Caribbean, and local removal efforts are one of the main tools used to help reduce their impact.

Participants may fish individually, either by boat or free swimming. The winner will be determined by the largest total catch by weight, with a single prize of $5,000 MXN for first place.
