Janal Pixán 2026 — Friday Night
Playa del Carmen begins its four-day Janal Pixán celebration with an evening dedicated to honoring departed loved ones and sharing the traditions of the Yucatán Peninsula. The festivities center around Plaza 28 de Julio, where visitors can explore an impressive Day of the Dead altar, a special exhibition of traditional altars from across Mexico, an artisan market and regional food stalls.
The evening also includes an opening ceremony led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, cultural performances representing Quintana Roo and Yucatán, and a children's alebrije competition. It's a wonderful opportunity for families to experience the colors, flavors and customs of Janal Pixán, the Maya tradition of remembering those who have passed away.
