El Matancero: The Story of the Ship

The old cannons in Akumal Bay are more than unusual landmarks. They are connected to El Matancero, a Spanish ship that sank near Akumal in 1741 and became part of the community’s maritime history.

Local archaeologist Miguel Covarrubias will discuss the shipwreck, the story behind the vessel and what its remains reveal about Akumal’s past. Hosted by Café La Jungla and Akumal Abierto, the talk offers residents and visitors a chance to learn more about a piece of local history that still lies within sight of the bay.
