Alma y Raíz: Janal Pixan 2026 in Leona Vicario
On Friday, October 30, 2026 Leona Vicario will honor loved ones who have died with Alma y Raíz, its community celebration of Janal Pixan. Families and visitors can expect a Paseo de Ánimas procession, traditional music, a Maya ritual honoring ancestors, a blessing and tour of altars, and cultural performances.
The municipality’s program also calls for displays of skulls and alebrijes made with recycled materials, with local schools and community groups taking part.
Three contests invite Leona Vicario residents to contribute to the celebration:
- Catrina and catrín costumes: Enter individually or as a pair. The children’s category is for ages 5–12; the open category is for ages 13 and up. Judges will consider makeup, clothing, originality and stage presentation. Open-category prizes are 5,000, 3,000 and 1,000 pesos; children’s prizes are 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 pesos.
- Janal Pixan altars: Individuals or teams of up to six may enter. Altars must include traditional elements and fit within 2.5 by 2.5 meters. Prizes are 20,000, 15,000 and 10,000 pesos.
- Handmade catrinas and alebrijes: Entries must measure 50 centimeters to one meter. Reused, recycled and natural materials are welcome. Prizes are 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 pesos.
